The Position

The Barista position is one that requires a passion for specialty coffee and desire to learn the craft with customer service ability. This individual must have a disposition for providing excellent customer service, work well with others as part of a team, and must have the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Rooney’s Brews is a coffee shop and café located in Roanoke College’s Fintel Library. The Barista will thrive if they possess strong interpersonal communication and teamwork skills, and have the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. This position works August through May when Rooney’s Brews is open and closed when Fintel Library is closed.

Key Responsibilities :

• Serve customers with enthusiasm in a positive and friendly manner
• Prepare and serve beverages to operation specifications and standards
• Prepare and serve food in a safe and sanitary manner
• Handling payment transactions accurately using a variety of tenders, including: Cash, Credit, etc..
• Develop strong knowledge of menu items and be able to provide customers with product details
• Complete training programming as directed to ensure strong product knowledge.
• Maintain all equipment, cleaning as required for peak operating performance
• Daily and weekly cleaning tasks as required in the café, seating areas and storeroom
• Complete daily inventory of menu items to assist in ordering products
• Wash dishes, equipment, and small wares as needed
• Educating customers on specialty coffee and engaging them for feedback
• Opening and closing of café following operating procedures

Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities :

• Previous experience in coffee service is preferred, however previous food service or customer service experience is considered
• Ability to meticulously maintain a clean and safe food service environment
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Positive communication with guests and co-workers is essential
• Required to obtain ServSafe certification within 6 months of hire.
• Weekend availability is required.
