Job Description

Umbra builds next-generation space systems that observe the Earth in unprecedented fidelity.

Our mission: Deliver global omniscience.

To stay ahead of climate change, geopolitical risk, and other major crises and issues, we need a global understanding of what is changing, where, and how fast. Umbra provides easy access to the highest-quality commercial satellite data available, which is an indispensable tool for the growing number of organizations monitoring the Earth. We empower our customers to create solutions that inform, inspire, and address our planet’s most pressing needs. We’re helping to create a new industry that has never meaningfully existed.

We are seeking a talented and motivated Senior DevOps Engineer to join our team. You’ll bridge multiple software teams and our centralized DevOps organization. You’ll champion developer experience by getting your hands dirty with our tools and processes, advocating for best practices while rolling up your sleeves to turn ambiguous challenges into clear, scalable solutions. You’ll be a mentor, collaborator, and the go‑to doer who’s always ready to dive in wherever the rubber meets the road. Your expertise will directly contribute to the scalability, reliability, and efficiency of our services, enabling our development teams to deliver innovative solutions. You’ll collaborate with self-starters, technically gifted and motivated software engineers, radar specialists, space operators, open-data enthusiasts, thought leaders, and people who get things done without much direction.

Our aim is to hire this position to work in Umbra's Santa Barbara, CA or Arlington, VA office. However, we are open to considering Remote applicants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Spend quality time embedded with each of our software engineering teams, understanding their workflows, pain points, and goals.

  • Develop shared libraries, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code modules, and self‑service capabilities that serve all teams.
  • Own complex, loosely defined problems, gather requirements, prototype solutions, and guide teams toward consensus.
  • Teach best practices in cloud architecture, containerization, observability, and automation. Host brown‑bags, office hours, and pairing sessions.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent work experience.

  • Expertise in infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or equivalent).
  • Proficiency in Python, Go, or another scripting/programming language.
  • Strong experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes).
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitLab, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, etc.).
  • Familiarity with monitoring, logging, and observability tools (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, etc.).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to get spun up on a team quickly and deliver value.
  • Experience working with teams in distributed environments.
  • Proven track record at startups, small teams, or as a solo contributor where you defined your own roadmap.
  • Experience embedded as a DevOps partner within multiple software teams.
  • Understanding of network topology, security groups, and compliance best practices.
  • Experience mentoring and leading technical workshops or brown‑bag sessions.
  • Experience working in aerospace, robotics, sciences, or other related technical fields.
