Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) in OPCA, the incumbent critically analyzes the proposed state and federal regulatory actions affecting pest management and oversees and participates in scientific research work and grant awards examining alternative pest management methods. Incumbent utilizes a large-scale pesticide use database and other data sources for the analysis of multifactorial integrated pest management questions. The incumbent maintains working relationships with other state, university, and federal agency scientists, and other stakeholders.

  • Use scientific expertise to analyze proposed state or federal pesticide regulatory actions for potential pest and disease management impacts to California agricultural production systems.
  • Lead the development of research work plans with UC Cooperative Extension researchers, other academic, government or industry researchers and pest management professionals to scientifically assess pest management impacts to the affected agricultural sectors.
  • Interpret research results on a wide range of topics.
  • Write reports for regulatory bodies on the agricultural pest management impacts of proposed regulatory actions.
  • Present information on pest management impacts analysis and pesticide critical use analysis research work plans, research status and results at stakeholder meetings, interagency work groups, public forums and scientific conferences as permitted under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with DPR.

Working Conditions

The duties of this job are performed mostly indoors. The incumbent works in cubicle environment. It is equipped with standard office equipment which includes a computer with various software programs, a telephone with voicemail, and modular office furniture.

Travel by State vehicle or other public transportation systems to various locations throughout the State may be required on an occasional basis. A complete list of working conditions can be found on the duty statement.

Knowledge of:

  • Data analysis and management.
  • One or more of the following: R, GIS, PostgreSQL, and SQL
  • California agriculture.
  • Agricultural pests and pest management.
  • Regulatory and legislative processes.

Ability to:

  • Independently conduct and manage complex and difficult analyses and studies on projects related to pest management in California.
  • Review and interpret scientific and environmental reports and be able to concisely summarize pertinent information.
  • Prepare clear, technically accurate, and politically sophisticated reports.
  • Maintain a professional and respectful working relationship with others.
